FAQ
We believe an informed client is a confident one. Here are answers to the questions we’re asked most often about our process, timelines, and services.
What types of services do you offer?
We specialize in custom cabinetry, full-kitchen and bathroom renovations, built-ins, and interior design. We also offer fine art fabrication and creative project management, collaborating with artists and cultural organizations to bring large-scale design concepts to life.
How do I get started with my project?
Start by scheduling a virtual or on-site consultation. During this session, we’ll discuss your goals, review your space, and outline a personalized plan. You’ll receive clear next steps, including design options, estimated timelines, and a detailed proposal.
Do you offer design services?
Yes. We provide 2D design plans and optional 3D renderings to help you visualize your project before fabrication begins. Our design services ensure every detail — from materials to layout — reflects your needs and style.
We also offer flat-rate design packages based on project scope. For example, basic cabinetry design — which includes 2D and 3D renderings and an initial project quote — is available to clients in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx for $1,000.00, with no obligation to use us for fabrication.
For clients who move forward with Kindgrain Studio for fabrication and installation, 50% of the design fee is credited toward the total project cost. This fee includes a 90-minute onsite consultation with measurements.
If you choose to work with another fabricator, that’s completely fine — we’re happy to collaborate or answer technical questions to ensure your project is executed as designed.
Our design services typically unfold in three phases:
-
Consultation & Measurements (1–2 weeks): After your virtual or on-site consultation, we take detailed measurements, review your goals, and confirm project scope.
-
2D Design Plans (1–2 weeks): We develop scaled layouts and elevations to visualize function, proportion, and flow.
-
3D Renderings & Revisions (1–2 weeks): Optional renderings and material refinements bring your project to life before fabrication begins.
Most design packages are completed within 3–5 weeks, depending on complexity, revision rounds, and response time. Once approved, we finalize your proposal and fabrication timeline.
How long does a typical project take?
Timelines vary by project size and complexity. Once design has been approved, as a general guide:
-
Smaller Projects: 8–10 weeks
-
Typical Custom Builds: 12–16 weeks
-
Complex or High-End Renovations: 16–20+ weeks
We provide a detailed production schedule and maintain consistent communication throughout the process. As a small, craft-driven studio, we accept a limited number of projects each quarter to ensure every client receives focused attention and quality workmanship. We review our schedule on a quarterly basis, and once fabrication and installation slots are filled, we pause new bookings until the next cycle.
We are also deeply committed to the wellness of our team, and as part of that commitment, we take dedicated winter and summer breaks each year. These rest periods allow our crew to recharge and return to the work with renewed focus and creativity.
Design-only clients are generally not affected by our quarterly booking schedule, but they are impacted by our winter and summer breaks. This balanced approach allows us to maintain wellness and deliver every project with care.
Do you provide project management
for renovations?
Absolutely. We manage every stage of your project — from design and permitting to fabrication, delivery, and installation. We coordinate with licensed electricians, plumbers, and other trades to ensure your renovation meets all code and quality standards.
We don't typically offer this service for clients who don't solicit design services from us, but it is worth reaching out.
Do you work outside of New York City?
Yes. We primarily serve Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, with extended service available in Staten Island, Long Island, the Hudson Valley (up to 90 minutes away), and parts of New Jersey. Travel fees may apply for locations outside our standard service area. On a case-by-case basis we accept projects outside of our main service areas, but this is typically for large cultural institutions or projects with timelines that range from 6-12 months.
How are payments structured?
To keep projects organized and transparent, payments are divided into four clear milestones:
-
Design Deposit (25%) – Reserves your project and covers design, site measurements, and initial materials.
-
Fabrication Deposit (25%) – Due at the start of production.
-
Pre-Installation Payment (25%) – Once fabrication is complete and prior to delivery.
-
Final Payment (25%) – Upon project completion and client approval.
-
This structure ensures progress aligns with payment and provides accountability at every phase.
How do you handle unexpected
costs or changes during the project?
We believe in transparent pricing and proactive communication. Every proposal includes a 5–10% contingency allowance to cover unforeseen conditions — such as hidden plumbing, electrical updates, or structural adjustments — especially in older NYC buildings. If any additional work is required, we’ll discuss it with you before proceeding, so there are no surprises and no hidden fees. Any unused contingency funds are credited back at project completion.
I'm looking for fine art services. Will my
process be different?
Our fine art services are designed for artists, curators, and cultural organizations who need technical expertise to bring creative concepts to life. The process begins with a consultation to review your project’s goals, materials, timeline, and installation requirements. From there, we develop a fabrication plan that includes detailed drawings, prototypes (if needed), and a clear production schedule.
We maintain open communication throughout fabrication, offering creative project management and on-site coordination to ensure your vision is realized accurately and safely. Whether you need assistance with sculptural builds, mixed-media installations, or exhibition design, Kindgrain provides the technical precision and collaborative partnership to make ambitious projects possible.
The payment process is the same for all clients across our services.
